Why Do Dogs Pant?

Panting is the canine version of sweating. Dogs don't have as many sweat glands as humans, but still need to cool off when hot. That's why dogs pant, to cool off. Dogs have a few sweat glands on the paw pads and some on their bellies, but not enough to keep them cool. When a dog pants, moisture evaporates from the dog's tongue, mouth and upper respiratory tract. As the moisture evaporates, the dog cools down. When a dog pants, the very shallow and rapid breathing can reach over 300 breaths per minute and it will appear as though the dog is expending a tremendous amount of energy to pant, however, that is not the case. Dog's become overheated very easily, and panting is their body's mechanism designed to prevent overheating. The elasticity of the dog's lungs and air passages makes panting very easy for them, expends very little energy and does not make the dog hotter. During the summer, keep your dog's water bowl filled and limit your dog's outdoor play time to the coolest parts of the day, after all, your dog is wearing a fur coat and is prone to heatstroke. Panting is his only way to let off body heat. |
