Where Are Bird Ears Located?

A bird has ears that are streamlined for flight, with no protruding ear lobe. The lack of bird ear lobe makes the ear a little tricky to find, but if you will look on the side of the bird's head in the location where you think an ear should be, you will see a small swirl of feathers. That's the bird's ear. The aerodynamic ear of birds do not allow them to hear high-pitched or low-pitched sound like humans can, but the bird ear can discern more sound details within their hearing range than humans can. Many pet birds love to have the ear area gently scratched by their owners, so look for the swirl of feathers on the side of the bird's head and give your bird a little ear scratch.

I've been around animals and birds all of my life, but never gave birds ears a thought.

The little swirl of feathers can be gently lifted to reveal... a hole! I was surprised that my chicken did not get annoyed when I fondled his ear covering.

I've seen them once. We had parakeets as kids and I was a curious kid! However, I would bet most people haven't.
