What Is Wasabi And How To Use It
By Sue Doenim
Wasabi is a root plant that grows wild in the mountains streams of Japan. If you have ever eaten wasabi, which is usually served with sushi or steamed fish, the green paste was made from grinding the roots of the wild plant. Wasabi packs a strong punch of heat to every bite and is also known as Japanese horseradish. Wasabi is in the same vegetable family as cabbage and mustard, and is used as a condiment for anything you wish to add a bite of heat too, usually a fish dish or mixed with mayonnaise and spread onto a sandwich. Tubes of prepared paste labeled as wasabi are often only common horseradish paste tinted with green food coloring to look like the real wasabi paste. Read the label carefully when purchasing wasabi in a tube to ensure you are getting the real thing. Wasabi also can be purchased in powdered form, water is added to form the wasabi paste when you are ready to use the powder.
