What Causes A Frozen Shoulder?

A frozen shoulder is not caused for being exposed to freezing temperatures, but rather from the way an arm is held after an arm or shoulder injury. A frozen shoulder usually occurs in people middle aged an older who have had an injured arm or shoulder and kept the shoulder immobile for a period of time to lessen the pain of the injury. Scar tissue develops between the shoulder joint surfaces and locks the shoulder into place. A frozen shoulder is treated with stretches, heat and anti-inflammatory medication. In some cases, steroids are injected into the frozen shoulder joint or electric impulses are used on the frozen shoulder to stimulate the nerves. Worst case scenario, in cases of severe frozen shoulder that will not respond to other forms of treatments, a doctor will numb the frozen shoulder and forcibly move it around. Frozen shoulder can be prevented by moving the shoulder every day (when possible) during recovery from an arm or shoulder injury.
