Teach Kids Through Gardening

By Sue Doenim

A garden is fertile ground for teaching young minds a wide variety of life lessons, plus it's just fun to kids to be able to dig in the dirt.

Teaching kids how their food grows, how that everything including the food they eat, needs a well balanced diet, water and sunlight to be healthy. Gardening with kids is also a teaching opportunity for learning about good bugs and bad bugs and teaching the difference between going green and using chemicals. Gardening with kids is also a time for parent/ child bonding experiences too.

It's not too late in the season to start a container garden. A few established flower or vegetable plants can be planted in a container and become productive by mid-summer.

Let the kids choose the plants for the containers and give them the responsibility for the container garden care (with your supervision). Purchase some inexpensive plastic garden tools for the very young child so they will have their own tools and feel even more involved in the gardening.

If your kids chose to grow vegetable plants in the garden, allow them to pick the ripe vegetables and help you prepare the vegetables for a meal. Getting them involved in the harvesting and food prep of the veggies they have grown will keep them inspired with gardening and give them a sense of accomplishment.

If your kids chose to grow flowers, allow them to pick them and make a floral bouquet for whomever they choose. When they see the warm smile of the flower bouquet recipient, it will inspire them to grow even more in next year's garden.

So many lessons we can teach kids through gardening, the possibilities are endless.
