Reduce Waste By Reducing Product Package Wrapping

By Sue Doenim

The majority of household waste (which ends up in the landfills) is product package wrapping. Household waste can be reduced with simple changes to reduce the amount of product packaging brought into the home.

Purchase products that have minimal package wrapping or that is wrapped with recyclable material. Buy products in bulk sizes and purchase fruits and vegetables loose.
Forgo purchasing small, pre-packaged snack foods, buy snacks in bulk sized packages and pack lunch sized portions at home in reusable containers.

Buying in bulk sizes reduces package waste and also saves the consumer money, bulk sizes are always cheaper per ounce than smaller packaged sizes of the same food product.

So true about purchasing in bulk and repackaging to save money. I have a storage container I call the kitchen. It has a soup and sandwich electric unit ( two cooking elements one for a pot/pan; the other side is a grill press - top closes on bottom to grill sandwiches ); a small corning war pan and pot; paper bowls for cereal; salt & pepper; plastic utensils; bottle of spray cleaner, disinfectant, plastic cups, roll of paper towels and two dish cloths ( one to wash and the other to dry ). All of this is to save on eating breakfast or having a late night snack, when my family (three of us) travels out of town and spend two to three days in a motel. The average cost for the three of us to eat breakfast at a waffle house for three days is $31 including tip. That's $93 in three days on one meal alone. With the same cost, we purchase a half-dozen eggs, waffles, fruit, milk, cereal, bread and syrup at a local grocer in the visiting town for less than $40; do not have to dress to get breakfast in the mornings and we tip ourselves $53+
