Perennial Flower Care In Fall
By Sue Doenim
The summer is winding down and fall is right around the corner. Our gardens and flower beds are slowing down production, but it's not yet time to quit taking care of our perennial flowers. Perennial flower care in fall should include the continuation of deadheading the flowers, but don't over prune them, pruning will encourage new growth and it's too late in the season to do that. Divide and transplant perennial flowers and shrubs in the fall for next year's flower garden. The transplanted perennial flowers and shrubs will have enough time to form a new root system before winter dormancy and will become better established in their new home when transplanted in the fall. Do not feed your perennial flowers and shrubs in the fall. Just like pruning, feeding them will encourage new growth. Water them if your area has a prolonged period without rain as long as they perennial flowers are blooming, but don't fertilize them. |
