Hummingbirds Love Bits Of Fruit To Go Along With Sugar Water Feeders By Sue Doenim Tiny, high energy hummingbirds are a favorite in everyone's yard. We hang our sugar water feeders with care each year, eagerly anticipating the arrival of the buzzing little hummingbirds. Hummingbirds also love bits of fruit and will be attracted to the fruit when offered in conjunction with the sugar water feeders. Small bits of apples, pears, oranges, kiwi and other fruit bits provide sweet nectar for the voracious appetites of the hummingbirds. Bits of leftover fruit or whole fruits diced into small bits and placed on a red paper plate or in a red bowl near sugar water feeders will attract more hummingbirds and a host of other birds and butterflies. Hummingbirds also eat small bugs for the protein content and the bits of fruit will attract the bugs for the hummingbirds too.
