How To Prune Evergreens For Christmas Decorations And Not Harm The Plant
By Sue Doenim
Cutting sprig and bows from evergreens located in your landscape is a great and economical way to bring the outdoors inside and enjoy the fruits of your gardening labors. When cutting those decorative and sometimes fragrant sprigs of evergreens, you want to use these tips so you won't harm your evergreen. December is a safe month to prune all evergreens, so no harm will be done to the plant by pruning. Distribute the pruning all over the evergreen to give it a uniform appearance, even if you don't need all the sprigs your prune off. Since evergreens do grow slowly, only a mild pruning is recommended. Prune on a warm, sunny day when the temperatures are above freezing. Boxwoods are one evergreen exception, and they are traditionally used for Christmas decor'--don't prune boxwoods when the winter temperature is below 40 degrees.
