How To Prevent Disease Transmission From Animal To Human
By Sue Doenim
There are some pretty nasty diseases that we can catch from animals, even our very own beloved pets. When a human develops an internal parasitic infestation like roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms, those worms were passed to the human from an animal. Ringworm is transmitted from animal to human. Lyme disease, rabies and salmonella are some other nasty diseases transmitted from animal to human. It's enough to make you think twice about having pets, but there's a simple and effective way to prevent disease transmission from animal to human. Wash your hands. Told you it was simple. Anytime you handle your pet, feed your pet or clean up after your pet, wash your hands thoroughly. Most animal to human disease transmission occurs when feces or raw foods have been handled, but hands have not been washed afterwards. When children have been outside playing where an animals potentially has defecated (and that's anywhere), teach them to wash their hands often and thoroughly. The same is true for adults, and wash hands after play time with your pets. We can't live in a pet-free or animal-free bubble, so the risk of disease transmission from animal to human will always be with us. The best prevention is wash your hands thoroughly and often.
