How To Make A Wisteria Vine Into A Tree By Sue Doenim If your wisteria vine has become overgrown and taking up too much of your landscape space, you can turn the wisteria vine into a wisteria tree. A wisteria tree takes up less landscape space and will bloom and look just as lovely as it did when it was a wandering vine. Start by cutting off all side shoot growth from the main trunk of the wisteria vine, then cut the top growth of the wisteria vine to the desired tree height. Stake the wisteria trunk with a strong metal pipe and loosely tie the trunk to the stake. Use a piece of old garden hose or other soft, flexible material so the tie will not cut into the wisteria vine. Every year in late summer, remove all side growth from the wisteria vine trunk and keep the top trimmed as needed, which you also do in the late summer. That's how you make a wisteria vine into a wisteria tree.
