How To Grow Vegetables In Bales Of Straw
By Sue Doenim
If you have limited garden space or if your soil is beyond repair for gardening, try growing some vegetables in bales of straw. Place a straw bale on a sheet of plastic, a large trash bag that has been cut open works great for this. Soak the bale of straw with water and keep it soaked for four weeks. This soaking will allow any weed seeds that may be in the bale of straw to germinate and then die, so they won't interfere with the vegetables you plant in the bale of straw. At the end of four weeks, make small holes in the bale of straw, fill the holes with compost or planting soil mix and plant your vegetable seeds or plants into the hole. Keep the bale of straw and seeds moist and watch your vegetables grow in bales of straw.
