Homemade Bird Suet Recipe That Won't Melt In The Summer Heat By Sue Doenim Birds love suet, which is basically a fat based chunk of bird food that gives the birds energy and doesn't have to be replaced or refilled daily by bird lovers. Since suet is fat based, it's difficult to keep it from melting under the heat of the summer sun. This bird suet recipe won't melt in the summer heat and is good for year around use. Mix together 4 cups of cornme al, 1 cup of all purpose flour, 1 cup of peanut butter and 1 cup of shortening. When you have mixed all the recipe ingredients together, form into a ball a place in a mesh onion bag or suet feeder and suspend from a tree or pole. You can also use pinecones to pack this suet into, or just pack the suet into tree bark or tree knots.
