Garden Tips For Tomato Planting

By Sue Doenim

When planting tomato plants in your garden, plant them on their sides in what is known as 'trench planting'. Trench planting tomatoes allows for more of the tomato plant stem to be underground, the more of the stem that is underground, the more root the tomato plant will produce, the more roots, the more water and food the tomato plant can take in.
By trench planting tomato plants, the plants develop a stronger root system that allows the tomato plants to be more drought tolerant and healthy.
Trench planting is as simple as normal garden planting, just dig a trench instead of a hole. Lay your tomato plant in the trench on it's side, and cover with dirt up to the first leaf on the tomato plant. The trench should be at least 6 inches deep, and always mulch tomato plants to retain moisture.
