Garden Sweet Potatoes, 3 Common Problems & How To Fix Them

Delicious sweet potatoes, packed with vitamins and minerals, good tasting and good for you. But when you dig the sweet potatoes up from your garden are they the large, healthy and abundant, or is your yield just a few puny looking cracked sweet potatoes? Cracked sweet potatoes are a result of water stress. You've allowed the soil to dry out too often or you've over-watered or a combination of both. To grow large, healthy looking sweet potatoes requires consistent garden soil moisture. Don't keep the soil too wet and don't allow it to dry out. Puny, skinny sweet potatoes are a result of not enough potassium in the garden soil. Have your garden soil tested to by your County Extension Agent or buy a home soil testing kit and amend the garden soil with the recommended amount of potassium before next planting season and your sweet potatoes will grow large and full next year. A small yield of low quality sweet potatoes indicates that the garden soil does not have enough nitrogen. Use fertilize with a high nitrogen rate next garden season.
