For The Birds: Don't Trim Your Pet Bird's Beak
By Sue Doenim
Your pet bird's beak is always growing, that's normal. Attempting to trim your pet bird's beak yourself is not something that you should undertake. Normal eating and the use of a cuttlebone by your pet bird will keep his ever growing beak trimmed naturally. If your pet bird's beak seems to be too large and overgrown, that is a sign of illness in your pet bird, not a sign that your pet bird needs a home beak trim. An overgrown beak is the sign of malnutrition in your bird or possible liver disease, and your pet bird needs to be seen by a veterinarian that specializes in avian care for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
