Does White T-Shirt Protect From Sunburn? By Sue Doenim Common and cool summer attire often consists of a white T-shirt. The white t-shirt being worn as a shirt or as a beach cover-up, and is thought to offer protection from sunburn to the covered torso. A white T-shirt offers very little protection from sunburn. The white cotton knit fabric provides an SPF of about 3%. To increase the sunburn protection that a white T-shirt offers, some manufacturers actually build in a higher SPF rating into the T-fabric, or there are laundry additives in which T-shirts can be laundered in that will increase the SPF rating of the fabric. If wearing a white T-shirt is your choice for protection against sunburn, applying a sunscreen to skin first will offer the most protection against painful sunburn and harmful UV rays.

Quite a useful tip for Northerners traveling to sunny Florida. We see tourists getting over-burned when they first arrive, and it's a shame.
