Chronic Cough Could Be Substernal Goiter By Sue Doenim Chronic coughs are often misdiagnosed and mistreated due to the simple fact that there are so many conditions that could be the underlying cause of a chronic cough. If you experience a chronic cough that continues for months or years that does not respond to any over-the-counter-treatment or prescribed treatment, the root cause of the chronic cough could be a substernal goiter. A substernal goiter is a thyroid gland enlargement located under the breast bone. The substernal goiter presses on the breathing tubes in the body and causes the chronic cough. Surgery to remove the substernal goiter eliminates the chronic cough.

Thanks for the info. Even though here in the Philippines all salt must now be iodized by law, I still see a lot of people with visible goiters. I bet there are quite a few folks with these substernal ones, too.
