Antibiotics, Can You Take Them Too Often?

By Sue Doenim

Antibiotics are not appropriate for certain illnesses, like a cold or flu, and taking antibiotics for viral infections can do more harm than good.

Antibiotics are very powerful medications and are only useful when taken to combat bacterial infections like sinus infections, strep throat or urinary track infections. Taking antibiotics too often for viral infections can lead to antibiotic-resistant strains of infections and more serious illnesses.

Don't take any left-over prescription antibiotics that you may have from a previous illness when you have a cold or flu. Any self-diagnosis and treatment with left-over antibiotics may cause you to take the wrong antibiotic or the wrong dosage for what ails you.

Follow your doctor's instructions when your are prescribed antibiotics. Take the full course of the antibiotic treatment, even after you begin to feel better.

When we are sick, we want a shot or pill to make us feel better, but in some cases, it's best to treat a low-grade infection without antibiotics.

To answer the title question ~ Yes, too often 'antibiotics' are consumed for 'general principle' as a means to shield the body from getting infected. People I do not believe antibiotice is a good choice to prevent viral infections . In fact, if there is no medical need for consumption of antibiotics ~ this can cause a disruption in the body to fight the anticiotics.
